Thruxton :: :: June 11th and 12th ......

Qualifying :: :: Warm, dry sunny weather was the order of the day for Saturday qualifying. It was an all Astra VXR affair at the front. Carrying maximum ballast of 45kgs from the race win at Snetterton at the last round, Adrian did 5 flying laps to conserve tyres and posted a 1:24.414, to claim a front row slot just 0.05 seconds behind Benlsey's Astra VXR, which was non ballasted. Carnaby's Astra VXR was third, Smith put the 330D on 4th, Duckman's Leon 5th and Kevin George in the sister Astra VXR 6th. Malone, Girling, Johnson and Cook completed the top ten grid. Qualifying was briefly halted after Bensley went straight on at the chicane due to a puncture and the session was red flagged. Once cleared, the remaining minutes of the session were run.

Race One :: :: A fast starting Churchill with maximum 45kgs of ballast on board, saw him get the better of pole sitter Bensley, who had repaired the front end of his Astra VXR in time to make the grid, away from the line and he set about getting into his rhythm. By the end of lap one Churchill had pulled a 1.1 second gap on Bensley and he then started to push home his advantage. Behind 3rd place starter Carnaby was putting in some quick laps and closed down Bensley to take 2nd place on lap 5. Mid way through the race, rain started to fall but not enough to trouble the slick tyres unduly. Easing off at the front, Churchill ensuring the car was brought home for the race win. Carnaby took second and Bensley completed the podium.

1 Adrian Churchill (Vauxhall Astra VXR) 14 laps in 20m 02.016s (98.78mph); 2 Thomas Carnaby (Vauxhall Astra VXR) +0.484s; 3 Ryan Bensley (Vauxhall Astra VXR); 4 Dan Malone (Seat Leon Cupra); 5 Gary Duckman (Seat Leon); 6 Joseph Girling (Vauxhall Astra); 7 Josh Cook (Renault Megane); 8 Rob Smith (BMW 330D E90); no other finishers. Fastest Lap: Carnaby 1m24.826s (99.98mph).

Race Two :: :: Sunday morning conditions were a complete change from the day before. The rain had closed in on the circuit, so by the time we came round to the first race of the day, wets had been fitted. After 2 laps round behind the safety car the grid formed up. Off the line Carnaby got the better grip and saw him with the advantage of the inside line as the circuit curves left between Allard and Campbell, taking the lead by the complex. Pressing on in the wet Carnaby opened up a healthy lead on Churchill, with Bensley in 3rd. The fast charging Megane of Cook, who started 6th had caught up to 3rd by lap 6, dropping Bensley to 4th and on lap 8 passed Churchill to take 2nd place. Into the last third of the race and the chassis set up of Chrchill's car came to him with both Chruchill (45kgs of ballast) and Cook (no ballast) starting to gain on the lead car of Carnaby rapidly closing down the lead man. Between Cook and Churchill they traded fastest laps for the next 5 laps, with Churchill emerging victorious grabbing the fastest lap at 1:29.278 and securing 3rd place, Cook in 2nd and Carnaby the winner.

1 Carnaby 14 laps in 21m 24.530s (92.43mph); 2 Cook +1.415s; 3 Churchill; 4 Bensley; 5 Duckman; 6 Malone; 7 Maurice Hayden (Renault Megane); 8 Steve Johnson (Vauxhall Astra VXR); 9 Girling; 10 Smith. FL: Churchill 1m 29.278s (95.00mph).

Race Three was not run due to the very poor weather conditions, the rain had really closed in during the day and the conditions were deemed unsafe with too much standing water on the circuit.

This race was run at the Rockingham Meeting - details can be found with the reports from Rockingham.
